Career Values Card Sort

This exercise is useful in identifying, classifying and prioritising what is most valuable to you in terms of work values. Values can change significantly over time and it is important to be clear on what is most important to you today. The Values Card Sort helps you to:

Pre-sorted as a starting point. Everything saves as you go.

Step one

Sort the cards

Review the Career Value descriptions, then place each value heading under the appropriate heading. Drag a card anywhere, including up and down within a column. Or tap a card, then tap a column heading to send it there, or another card to drop it in above.

Step two

Prioritised work values

Review your list of “always valued” and “often valued”. Re-prioritise your top 8. 1 being your most important through to your 8th most important value. You may wish to group some values which are similar into one heading. Eg: “Self-management” and “Independence”.

Tick those items that are presently being met in your life (either at work/your last role or outside of work).

Step three

Your top 8

Two pages: your top 8 with definitions, then the full card sort.

What this is

H2R's values card sort, rebuilt as something a client can actually complete on a laptop or a phone, in an afternoon's work.

The content is H2R's. The build is mine, and it is a prototype: one person's sort, not a product.

What it would take to be yours

  • H2R's own branding and logo, properly applied
  • A consultant view, so the results arrive before the session rather than being read out in it
  • The drivers exercise and the achievement statements handout, given the same treatment
  • Results that carry into the CV and profile templates instead of being retyped
